How To Become A Referee

The Risk Management Card Information requires clarification because it has changed since 2010. In the upper-right corner is the word "KIDSAFE". Underneath it is the date the risk management card was issued. IT IS NOT THE EXPIRATION DATE OF THE RISK MANAGEMENT CERTIFICATION. In order to determine the expiration date add 2 years to the date printed. For example: a date of 9-18-11 is the date the card was issued. The expiration date is really 9-18-13. (The RM card is valid for 2 years from the date of issue. That is why you must add 2 years to the printed date.) Basic Information A current risk management number is required IF you want to certify or recertify as a USSF referee, AND you are (or will be) 18 years old as of the class date. Having a current RM# means you have passed a background check for certain types of offenses/convictions. If you are not able to obtain a RM# and want to be a USSF referee, your individual situation will have to be reviewed by the Michigan Referee Committee. DO NOT APPLY BEFORE YOU ARE 18- your payment will be processed, but the system does not do the check unless you are at least 18 years old on the date you apply for the rm#. You should make sure that your Risk Management Card is not only valid as of the class date, but also during the season that your are officiating. Additional information & instructions for printing additional copies of the Risk Management card are at www.michiganreferee.org, "tools tab" then "Risk Management". If you are required to have a RM#, and do not present a valid RM card (not just the number) to the instructor, the Michigan Referee Committee (and GVSOA) will allow you to take the class and the exam. If you pass the exam, you will NOT receive a referee badge until the instructor receives a copy of your valid RM card. IT IS YOUR RESPONSIBILITY TO MAKE SURE THE INSTRUCTOR VIEWED YOUR VALID RM CARD.
